"I don't care if I have to work two jobs, I'm gonna have a nice house and a nice car and I'm gonna look good!"

That's the American Dream right? Nice car, nice house, and nice clothes. Who cares how we pay for it (notice the sarcasm!)

Thanks to easy credit, he may obtain all of those things

I really do have a different philosphy. I will cut back on my lifestyle to be able to support myself while maintaining sanity and a balanced life. I get much more enjoyment from having a couple of good friends and having time to spend time with family than showing up in the nice car. (I have a ford taurus.... ugh..)

That makes me sad, but is that person's own choice. Maybe he/she needs to read Your Money or Your Life!

At least he's working hard. Someone just put 0 downpayment on the house, used the equity to buy a new car then walked away from the house.

Working so hard just to look good? Who wants to leave behind a beautiful, young corpse?

I hope the airport car rental agent did not have any kids! Otherwise he has his priorities mixed up.

I have finally found a balance between enjoying myself and saving my money for the right things, it feels good, however, I can always do better.

I don't see anything wrong with that attitude. At least she is working to get the things she wants out of life instead of mooching off everyone else.

Its of course fine if that's what that person wants and is willing to work night and day (in presumably menial jobs) in order to get it but it definitely is sad! Its funny how so many people here make fun of France (mostly done by people who have barely or never traveled out of the country). Yet we all have a short time to live and our French counterparts really enjoy life like most Americans never will. They work 35 hours per week, have better purchasing power and a higher quality of living than middle class Americans, they go out in the evenings regularly and travel 6 weeks each year all over the world. They don't worry about affording health care or retirement. Its not the place to be if you want to become super successful and make millions or billions, but since 99.9% of us will never be super successful anyway than why care about that?

I think you should do a poll to see if people think the comment came from a male or female.

I think the people here looking down on that person have a negative outlook. Sure the "look at me" mentality isnt ideal but at least that person understand to have nice things equals work.

Some people only get one job, by expensive things and go into debt. At least this person understands they need the income to pay for it.

Never mind that you can have those things with ONE job if you are willing to live frugally and be smart with your money... and work out and eat right. They lead directly to good things, but people tend to want to get things the easy way. Fact is, credit is not the insurance to get you there... it's the insurance that you probably won't be able to keep it.

While I admire the work ethic,it's sad he/she thinks those things are important. It's a credit to the advertising industry, I guess. A complete brainwash. I can say this: that when calamity strikes, none of those possessions have any meaning. It's just stuff.

I don't think the comment is bad, in fact it can be indicative of this person's work ethic. They are willing to work hard (two jobs) to get the things that are important to them (material possessions). I don't share the same wants, but if they are willing to work to get them, more power to them!

If you look at it ... the person is wanting validation from material possessions - it's kind of sad! But if you look at it ... their ambitious as hell & going to achieve their goals - it's inspiring!
Personally I'm leaning towards it's probably the first perspective.

My coworkers chipped in cash to someone else this morning who was going down to the company cafeteria. They asked "Do you want anything?" and as usual I said no. I bring my own lunch. I eat breakfast at home.

They proceeded to snack on lattes, breakfast sandwiches and scones. When the subject of the economy came up they said "Yeh, it's awful!" and "Yes, I AM feeling the pinch!"

I had to bite my tongue. C'mon you must be kidding. Until you aren't spending freely on eating out each day as though you're entitled to it (what's worse is that free bagels ARE provided at my job on weekends) I don't want to hear how hard you have it.

I don't see anything wrong with the person's attitude. As someone who works two jobs, I admire his work ethic. In the near future my 2nd job will allow me to be debt free and start looking at home ownership.

At least I know am not depending on the system or taking handouts from family.

What's wrong with looking good?
Why is this person being called sad and negative.
At least they are wiling to work their ass to the bone for it!

Looks aren't everything, but nobody wants to look like a slob and a pig.
It's nothing wrong for wanting have nice things and look good.

We only live once.
Enjoy it and live within your means.
