There's an article in today's NY Times about counterfeit goods sold by street vendors. This quote caught my eye:
“It’s the prices you can get, with what little money you have,” said Ellen Counts, 41, of Belleville, Mich. She comes several times a year for socks, underwear and other clothing for her family....Does anyone really believe the prices on socks and underwear at street vendors, plus the cost of travel from Michigan to NYC several times a year, are the best you can do? Come on, you're in Michigan, you probably have a WalMart 5 minutes away.

she's probably the same person who drives 30 miles out of her way to fill up at the gas station that's 3 cents/gallon cheaper than the place by her house.
I'm not sure which is more disturbing, the fact that the woman quoted travels from Michigan to buy counterfeit designer underwear, or the fact that the T-shirt vendor quoted in the article carries shirts up to a size 6XL.
Both are signs of excess and of truly messed up priorities.
