Cost Comparison: A Meal vs. a Sailboat

I took sailing lessons a couple of years ago, and ever since, it's been something I dream of doing more often. I occasionally read a blog called Sail Brooklyn, and I love it whenever he posts things about the costs of sailing. Here's a post which compares the cost of a meal at Per Se to buying a Sunfish!
At the risk of spoiling a surprise, I'll tell you that you can get the boat for less!

Buy a boat, skip the dinner the memories will last you a lot longer, or better get into a sailing club that offers the oppt to sail when you want to, but you do not have to worry about winter storage, if the thing is tied down during as storm and so on. It has been a huge expense in my life the different times that I have owned a sailboat on Long Island, but the pictures, friendship and laughs have made the cost worth it....

Do not get a sail boat unless it is a small on (less than 20 ft). My father thought he could afford to get one and it ruined him. They are expensive if you buy one new, but getting one used can drop the price. What most people don't account for is the cost of owning one. Based on what I read about you money standing you will end up hating sailing because of the burden of upkeep. If you really want one I would recommend that you crew on a race team fisrt so that you can get an understanding of what it really cost to have a boat. Find someone with a 30 ft boat that is about 10 years old and sail with them and let them know you want to get one and ask them for advice about the cost of it. Beware of the sales man, banks give you long loans on boat and that makes it look like you can afford it but every year my dad spent more on upkeep than the payment, insurance, and dock charge.
