Fortune Cookie

Here's the latest words of wisdom I picked up along with my fried rice:

Don't eat your fortune.
Ha ha, I thought, imagining what it would be like to accidentally chew and swallow the little piece of paper. But then I realized this was actually one of the more useful reminders I've ever gotten. I have been spending too much money on food-- I am literally eating my fortune!
So I've been trying to crack down on my food expenses-- I've been buying lunch less, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and trying to cook at home as much as possible, despite the limitations of using someone else's lousy pans and an oven where the broiler pan is missing and the door is falling off. And [gasp] I am having a wine-free week. Not a "free wine" week-- wouldn't that be nice! But a no-wine, wine-less, just-say-no-to-vino kind of week. (I'm swearing off beer and all other alcohol too.) We'll see how it goes. If I come in under budget for September, I'll have to drink and feast liberally next month to celebrate!

Apropos of food savings, here is an article from MSNBC.com with some tips on minimizing your supermarket spending.
