Snicker Shock

I had a little candy attack yesterday when I bought my lunch at the deli. Most times, I am able to resist these temptations, but lately I've been building up a real craving! And maybe PMS tipped me over the edge or something, I don't know...

Anyway, I almost bought a Snickers, as their stupid advertising campaign that's everywhere lately has been effective in actually making me want a Snickers even though it annoys me to no end. But instead of the Snickers, I ended up buying one of those Ritter Sport bars that are becoming more and more common here. They make one with a sort of butter cookie interior that reminds me of my favorite Choco Leibniz cookies. I'd bought a mini-sized one before, but today I decided to go for the full-size bar. But when it was rung up, I was shocked that it cost $4.

That is a lot more then a Snickers would have cost-- maybe 4 times as much? The Ritter bar was maybe only 50% more in weight or volume. And it didn't end up being 50% more yummy-- I thought it would just be chocolate and cookie, but there turned out to be a cocoa cream in there too that made it feel a bit gloppy in the mouth.

Oh well-- I won't be spending that $4 ever again...

They don't cost $A6 here! More like $A3 something. The plain dark chocolate ones are good. Some of the other variants not so good probably. Haven't had one for a long time. I think I first encountered them while cycling in Switzerland more than twenty years ago.

You know it's the end of the world when a Snickers bar costs more than a sandwich.

They're imported - here in Germany they cost €0.85. Twenty cents more than when I moved here seven years ago!

You can get them at Jack's 99 Cent Emporium for a buck-something. Duane Reade also puts them on sale for 99 cents pretty regularly.

Love the butter cookie one (the gloppier, the better), but I'm off sweets. . . 88 days and counting.

Madame X, are you slipping? You paid it?!? I had a similar experience with a protein shake in the work cafeteria...no sticker, so when the cashier rang it up, I laughed and said, oh no way. She laughed too when she canceled the sale.

I agree that the butter cookie-chocolate cream Rittersport is not one of the better flavors. However, overall, with candy you get what you pay for. Snickers are cheap, but they're full of lots more weird junk than Rittersport, which are made from better ingredients.

I am over Ritter Sport. I got them at discount when I worked in a gourmet food shop in high school. Our bakery turned out chocolate chip cookies that were a lot better.

Oh well, lesson learned. Not worth the $4.

They're a buck and change here on sale, closer to $2 when not. $4 would have me putting it back!

try the one with cornflakes. or marzipan (yum)

this is so funny. i've never heard of a ritter sport! we have cliff bars, but i think they are yummy and worth the $2.00 or whatever they are. well...worth it if i had a decent cash flow. don't worry, no expensive food bars for this budgeting girl right now!

You would have been better off getting the snickers, as annoying as that would have been, much cheaper in comparison.

They are $1.99 at Trader Joe's and I believe Duane Reade sells them for $2.79
