Paying for Casual Friday??

Apparently some companies tell employees they can wear jeans on certain Fridays in exchange for a charitable donation. Have you ever heard of something like this? If people in my office had to donate $5 every time they wore jeans, we could probably feed NYC's homeless all year!

Yes- at my husband's fortune 500 company they pay $2 to wear jeans on Friday. They rotate the charity each Friday. I think it may have been started by a United Way campaign.

Yes! I think it's pretty common actually.

At my big 4 accounting firm, we had a jeans day one Friday a month and had to pay $5 to a designated charity.

Our boss started this at our company years ago, and the $2 donation goes into our social commitee fund. It really helps throughout the year when we have our bbq's!!

Yup, my previous company was business casual on Fridays. They occasionally would allow jeans on Fridays for a donation to UW. They're a higher Fortune 500 company.

I work for a large bank, although not directly with the public. We're business casual M-Th, with jean's day every Friday (at no cost). However, many departments sell "jean's days" to raise money for charity (like $5 per week, etc.). I have more work clothes than jeans, so I generally stick to business casual......www.portlandbabylon.blogspot.com

My company recently did something similar, only it was "team shirt day" and people donated money to wear a sports team shirt. I also saw this practice when I attended a school with a uniform and we occasionally had charity civvies days (when we could make a donation and not have to wear the uniform).

Yes! I work at a top 10 accounting firm and we do it here. It's actually $10 a month and $20 for managers & up. The charity changes every month or two via employee voting system..

This is how my company operates. Everyone pays $5 on Fridays to wear jeans. The money goes to a different charity each week. Charities are submitted by the employees. I think it raises around $1000 a week. The company is large enough that you could wear jeans and no one would know whether you contribute or not.. if you don't feel guilty. :)

We never got a year end update, or a personal update. Being in love is cute, but I want Madame X back. How is the publishing industry doing? Have you had a promotion?

Just wondering!

Our office does this. Its not five dollars though haha, that would never work. You pay a dollar into the charity jar, and at the end of the month we send it to a charity such as the Boys and Girls club, or just donate to our local school district. Its becoming much more popular these days, a couple of my girlfriends work in an office that does he same thing too.

Quite common in the UK actually, especially at corporate firms. I think you'll find that creative/media companies are more laid back so jeans are a norm - there would be an uproar at our place should they decide to charge for the privilege, no matter how good the cause!
